30 Days of Thanks: Day 10
Yucky old carpet.
When we bought this house almost 10 years ago, it had yucky old carpet. We had 2 big dogs. And muddy woods behind the house. At that point, we decided to re-carpet the second story, but leave the main floor “for now”. It really didn’t make sense to replace it – we had two big dogs, in and out all the time, then the kid came along, and, well, you know how that goes.
So, not only is the carpet yucky and stained (I should throw in here that we *do* vacuum every once in a while and get it cleaned on occasion
) but it’s ugly. It’s gray, and maybe at some time was a slightly nicer shade of gray, but still, ugly.
So why am I thankful for it?
Because today, it is raining. And so there are muddy shoes and paws.
Because yesterday, spaghetti sauce was spilled on the floor. The dogs helped clean some of it up, but still… spaghetti sauce…
Because when the kid was sick, some Tylenol got dropped. The red kind.
Because if a guest accidentally spills a drink, I can say “Don’t worry about it” and really mean it.
Because knowing it will have to be replaced makes it easier to let go of the little drops and spills and messes and move on to the fun parts of life. Like puddle jumping, or slurping spaghetti, or snuggling on the couch with a story, or having another glass of wine.
Oh, and the best part? There’s a hole. In the carpet, in the padding, in the floor. If you get down and put your eye to it, you can see all the way through to the basement. You can drop things through it and run downstairs and get them and do it all over again. I think when (if) we replace the yucky old carpet, we’ll have to keep the hole.
